On July 6, 2019, Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata was set to join Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal from the Premier League club, following the end of his 18-month loan with the La Liga club.
Morata, who left Chelsea in January 2019 to join Atletico, had stated in May that he had no plans to return to his parent club, citing a dip in form during the previous season.
However, the 26-year-old Spanish striker rediscovered his touch in Madrid, scoring six goals in 17 games since his move.
Atletico Madrid confirmed the permanent transfer in a statement, citing an agreement with Chelsea that would see Morata join the club on a permanent basis from July 1, 2020.
“Atletico de Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement over the transfer of Alvaro Morata from July 1, 2020,” the statement read.
Morata joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in 2017 and scored 24 times in 72 appearances for the London club.
Chelsea thanked Morata for his contribution and wished him the best of luck for the future.
