Seven people, including a policeman, were killed in a jihadist attack in northern Mozambique, claimed by the Islamic State group, local sources said.
The attack occurred on Wednesday evening in Lidjungo village in the Nangade district of Mozambique's northern Cabo Delgado province.
One policeman and six civilians, including two children, were among the victims.
The Islamic State group has been targeting remote communities in the gas-rich, Muslim-majority Cabo Delgado province since October 2017, killing over 250 people and forcing thousands from their homes.
According to SITE Intelligence, the Islamic State group issued a statement claiming involvement in the attack, saying its fighters clashed with the military and seized weapons and ammunition.
However, analysts have expressed doubts over the claim, suggesting that it is unlikely that the group would have direct contact with fighters in Mozambique.
