Senegal forward Sadio Mane scored his third goal of the Africa Cup of Nations, but his side's progress was not without its challenges. On Friday, Senegal beat Uganda 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals, with Mane scoring in the 15th minute.

However, Mane's penalty kick was saved by Uganda's goalkeeper Denis Onyango in the 61st minute, squandering the chance to give Senegal some breathing space. The game featured 45 fouls, making it a physical contest.

Uganda, who were in the knockout stages for the first time in 41 years, gave Senegal a stern test at the Cairo International stadium. Despite being outsiders, Uganda's players were involved in a pay dispute with their federation in the run-up to the game.

Senegal will now face rank outsiders Benin in the quarter-finals after Benin beat Morocco on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Mane has now taken three penalties in the finals, missing one and converting one in the 3-0 win over Kenya, where he also scored from open play. Senegal coach Aliou Cisse stated that Mane would remain the team's penalty taker, citing his confidence in the captain.

Uganda's coach Sebastien Desabre expressed pride in his players, despite their early goal concession from an individual mistake. The game was marked by Onyango's habit of charging off his line, which left Ugandan nerves on edge throughout.
