Published on July 6, 2019, Lupita Nyong'o, a Kenyan-Mexican actress, credits her Oscar win for making it easier to acquire a US Green Card.
Speaking to Thanu Yakupitiyage and Rage Kidvai of the 'Bad Brown Aunties' podcast, Lupita shared her experience of struggling to establish herself in the US without permanent residency.
She explained that to acquire a Green Card, she was required to secure a permanent job or win an international film award, which she achieved by winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2014 for her role in '12 Years A Slave.'
Born in Mexico to Kenyan parents, Lupita spent her early years in Mexico and Kenya before attending college in the US, where she earned a bachelor's degree in film and theater studies from Hampshire College.
