On July 6, 2019, the world lost a true leader and an inspiration to many, Bob Collymore, the CEO of Safaricom. As we reflect on his life and legacy, one thing stands out – his unyielding spirit and resilience in the face of adversity.

Abigail Adams, the mother of John Quincy Adams, once said, 'It is not in the still calm of life or the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed … the habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties. Great necessities call out great virtues.'

These words aptly describe Bob Collymore, a man who faced numerous challenges throughout his life, from being disappointed in not being able to attend Warwick University due to lack of funding at 17, to starting his first job at 12. Yet, he persevered, and his story is a testament to the power of determination and resolve.

When Bob took over Safaricom in 2012, the company was at a crossroads. He was confronted with the dilemma of filling the shoes of a great predecessor, Michael Joseph. Guided by a strong sense of vision and powered by a clear moral purpose, Bob steered the company towards a new era of growth and success.

But what Bob will be remembered for is not just his corporate achievements, but how he dealt with the most difficult moments in his life. We remember him not for his highest moments, but for the man he was in his lowest moments. His courage and attitude of gratitude in the face of cancer treatment are a powerful lesson for us all.

As he said, 'I have to make friends with cancer,' accepting the reality of his situation and adjusting his life to deal with the challenge. This poignant lesson is one that we can all learn from, and it is a reminder that resilience is truly the soul of life.
