On July 6, 2019, Kenya marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Tom Mboya, a key figure in the country's struggle for independence. The solemn ceremony served as a reminder of the nation's complex history and the need for a new path forward.
Tom Mboya's contributions to Kenya's freedom struggle, which began with trade unionism and later shifted to political activism, ultimately led to the country's independence in 1963. He joined the Cabinet at independence and quickly emerged as a leading thinker, economic planner, and shaper of the nation's destiny.
However, his life was cut short when he was assassinated just six years after independence. This tragic event was not an isolated incident, as Kenya has a long history of unresolved political assassinations. In 1965, Pio Gama Pinto, a firebrand politician, was gunned down in Nairobi's Westlands area, followed by the mysterious deaths of JM Kariuki in 1975 and Foreign Affairs minister Robert Ouko in 1990.
More recently, claims of a plot to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto have dominated the political landscape. Investigations are underway, and an official at the DP's office has been charged with circulating a suspicious document related to the alleged plot.
It is concerning that the topic of political elimination continues to feature in Kenya's national discourse, highlighting levels of mistrust and a distorted view of politics. Politics should be about the competition of ideas, not a matter of life and death.
Catholic Bishop Alfred arap Rotich called for national reconciliation and tolerance during the Mboya memorial, stating that the vicious contest for political positions is tearing the country apart. He emphasized that a divided nation is unmanageable and does not serve the interests of political contenders.
With a long history of political deaths, Kenya's leaders must take a sobering look at the country's future. Talks of political assassination and ethnic mobilization risk leading the nation down a path of violence, which must be avoided at all costs.
