On July 5, 2019, Benin pulled off a major upset in the Africa Cup of Nations, defeating 10-man Morocco 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in Cairo.

Moise Adilehou scored the opening goal for Benin in the 54th minute, forcing home a corner kick. Youssef En-Nesyri equalized for Morocco in the 75th minute, scoring from a mistake by Jordan Adeoti.

Benin's Hakim Ziyech had a chance to win the game for Morocco in stoppage time, but he struck the post with his penalty kick. The Atlas Lions were left to count the cost of those misses as they were eliminated from the tournament.

Benin's victory marked a significant upset, as they were winless in 12 previous Cup of Nations matches. The team's win was a testament to their determination and resilience, and they will now face Senegal or Uganda in the quarter-finals.

Angolan referee Helder Martins Rodrigues de Carvalho oversaw the match, which was marred by controversy when Benin's Khaled Adenon was given a second yellow card for dissent, leaving his team to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
