July 5, 2019: The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been marred by match fixing allegations, with DR Congo and Zimbabwe at the center of the controversy.

A Madagascan newspaper reported that Zimbabwe deliberately threw their final pool match against DR Congo to allow the latter a chance to advance to the Last 16.

The allegations claim that Zimbabwean goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, who plays for Baroka FC in the PSL, was promised payment to allow DR Congo to score the goals needed to earn a second-round meeting with Madagascar.

However, the authenticity of the allegations is questionable, given that Madagascar is set to play against DR Congo in the next round.

DR Congo needed a big win over Zimbabwe to advance, but came into the game on the back of defeats to Uganda and hosts Egypt.

Following the allegations, the head of DR Congo's football federation and TP Mazembe owner Moise Katumbi wrote to CAF, inquiring that investigations be conducted concerning the matter.

Katumbi also threatened to sue for defamation, as seen in a strongly-worded letter to CAF.
