On June 28, 2019, a dramatic scene unfolded at Ptokou Village in Pokot Central sub County, where Joseph Rionosia caught his wife, Josephine Moroto, in a compromising position with another man in their matrimonial bed.
Infuriated, Rionosia turned his anger on his wife, ordering her out of the house while brandishing a panga. It was only after she left that he turned to the property, chopping assorted household items worth Sh60, 000 indiscriminately.
Josephine Moroto later took her husband to court, accusing him of maliciously damaging her property and seeking compensation. Rionosia pleaded guilty to both charges, citing that he was carried away by his emotions.
However, in a surprising twist, Resident Magistrate Godfrey Okwengu ruled that Rionosia had done less harm, especially in controlling his emotions against physically hurting someone. He was subsequently discharged under section 35(1) of the Penal Code.
