July 5, 2019 - Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa has broken his silence on Harambee Stars' performance at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
Speaking to Citizen TV, Mwendwa expressed pride in the team's handling at the tournament, stating that it was the first time players did not complain about unpaid allowances.
"We have shown that we can develop football in Kenya. I am proud for how the team was handled at the tournament because it was the first time that this was happening. We did not have any cases of players lamenting about unpaid allowances and it is a good step towards developing the game," Mwendwa said.
However, Mwendwa acknowledged that the team's performance was affected by injuries, particularly to key defenders who were not part of the team at the tournament.
"We had not planned for these injuries. A player like Joash Onyango was fully fit before the team left for France but only got injured during the last training session before the competition," Mwendwa commented.
Despite the setbacks, Mwendwa remains optimistic about the team's future, citing the upcoming CHAN qualifiers as a priority.
