Millennials Redefine Wedding Traditions

July 5, 2019

Millennials are redefining wedding traditions, prioritizing experiences and personalization over traditional customs. According to a recent trend, couples are getting married later in life, with the average age now 33, and are prioritizing education, careers, and travel.

As a result, 58% of couples are marrying outside of their race, religion, ethnic, or regional background, reflecting the increasing diversity and openness of the millennial generation.

Wedding entrepreneurs are now focusing on the millennial market, recognizing the potential for growth and the unique characteristics of this demographic. Catherine Masitsa, CEO and founder of Samantha Bridal, notes that millennials are highly tech-savvy, well-educated, and accustomed to being bombarded by media messages.

Millennials are also more likely to prioritize experiences over material possessions, with many opting for destination weddings and renting luxury items instead of buying them. This shift towards experiences and personalization is driven by the desire for unique and memorable celebrations that reflect their values and style.

As a result, wedding planners and vendors are adapting to meet the changing needs of millennial couples. Cate Nganga, a wedding planner, notes that couples are now more empowered to create their own unique wedding experiences, free from traditional expectations.

With the rise of social media, millennials are also placing a high value on creating Instagram-worthy weddings, with location and price being the most important factors. To achieve this, couples are investing in videographers, photographers, and other services to capture every moment of their special day.
