On July 5, 2019, the University Academic Staff Union of Kenya (UASU) expressed its opposition to the Ministry of Education's proposal to merge universities.
According to UASU Secretary General Dr. Constatine Wesonga, the government's plan is driven by 'ill motives' to 'loot the money' invested in developing universities across the country.
Wesonga emphasized the union's expertise in education matters and stated that the government cannot pass proposals without consulting education experts.
He warned that merging universities without proper advice could put smaller institutions at risk of facing the same problems as major public universities, including lack of transparency and financial constraints.
UASU Chairman Professor Muga K'olale vowed to 'tell it right to the Government' and 'win this war,' emphasizing the union's commitment to positive varsity transition.
