On July 4, 2019, a Nairobi court granted the prosecution's request to detain blogger Dennis Itumbi pending the conclusion of investigations into a letter alleging a plot to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto.

Magistrate Zainabu Abdul of the Milimani court directed Itumbi to be held at Muthaiga Police Station for five days to allow police to complete their investigations.

The letter, which was allegedly shared on social media platforms, claimed that a group of leaders from the Mt. Kenya region, including four Cabinet Secretaries, had been meeting at La Mada Hotel to plan Ruto's assassination.

The four Cabinet Secretaries named in the letter are Peter Munya (Trade), Sicily Kariuki (Health), Joe Mucheru (ICT), and James Macharia (Infrastructure).

Investigations, which involved the DCI and the FBI, reportedly established that the letter originated from a cybercafe in Nairobi's Lang'ata estate.
