President Uhuru Kenyatta will flag off the 2020 Safari Rally from the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani on Friday, July 5, 2019, at 11am.
The rally, which has been given good support by the government, is a crucial test for Kenya's bid to regain its status as a World Rally Championship (WRC) round.
A delegation from the International Automobile Federation (FIA), led by safety delegate Michele Mouton, will observe the rally and make key decisions about its future.
Kenyan drivers, including Manvir Baryan and Carl Tundo, are among the frontrunners in the competition, which will cover a total distance of 811 kilometres over three days.
Onkar Rai, who crashed in the final stages of the 2018 rally, is also a favourite for a top podium finish.
“Preparations have been going well. We didn’t have much time with the cars after the Zambia Rally, but we managed a small test to get back into it,” Rai said.
Senior government officials, including Sports Permanent Secretary Kirimi Kaberia and Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita, will also be competing in the rally.
