On Thursday, July 4, 2019, a memory service was held at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi to eulogize the late Bob Collymore, the former CEO of Safaricom.
Collymore's friends, family, and colleagues shared heartwarming memories of the departed CEO, highlighting his exceptional leadership, sense of humor, and commitment to changing lives.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, who spoke at the service, recalled a conversation he had with Collymore just three weeks before his passing. Collymore had called the President at 2am to inform him that he would not be able to fulfill a promise he had made to him.
"I want you to take care of Wambui and the kids," Collymore told the President, who was visibly moved by the request.
Deputy President William Ruto praised Collymore for being a source of inspiration, citing his remarkable success in running the most profitable enterprise in Kenya despite not having a university degree.
Wambui Collymore, the late CEO's widow, delivered a poignant message, saying that her husband had left when the applause was loudest.
Other speakers, including Peter Kenneth, Nicholas Nganga, Patrick Quarcoo, Michael Joseph, Alice Chepkorir, Charles Msandu, Nick Read, Esther Muchemi, and Joshua Chepkwony, shared their own memories of Collymore, highlighting his bravery, sense of humor, and commitment to changing lives.
