On July 4, 2019, Brian Bera, a 5th-year student at Jomo Kenya University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Nairobi, was shot and injured after jumping over the State House fence.

He appeared before Magistrate Francis Andayi on Thursday, but did not take a plea. The court set August 7, 2019, as the date for plea taking, pending receipt of his medical report from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).

Bera was released on a Ksh.100,000 personal bond, with the condition that his father would take good care of him in Eldoret, where he would undergo treatment at MTRH.

During his first court appearance, Bera pleaded with President Uhuru Kenyatta for forgiveness, while his father attributed his son's actions to a failure to take prescribed medication.

The prosecution had sought to have Bera taken to Mathare Hospital for mental assessment before taking a plea.
