On September 27, 2021, Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) marked a significant milestone in its diversification strategy by launching a state-of-the-art Research and Development Centre at Tana Power Station in Muranga County.
The centre, which is expected to take 18 months to complete, will serve as an innovation hub, providing locally sourced technological solutions for electricity generation and augmenting KenGen's efforts to increase generation capacity.
Speaking during the foundation stone laying ceremony, KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Mrs Rebecca Miano, emphasized the importance of the project in identifying and implementing new revenue streams.
“With this facility, KenGen employees now have a place to carry out trials, tests, experiments and pilot new business in the context of our diversification strategy,” said Mrs. Miano, adding that the facility will conceive ideas that will change the company’s business and the energy sector for good.
The project has already benefited the local community through the provision of employment for skilled and semi-skilled workforce, with the contractor engaging a total of 92 short-term contract staff, comprising 81 males and 11 females.
KenGen has put in place measures to ensure the safety of employees and contractors working on the project, observing the laid-down protocols for COVID-19.
