On July 4, 2019, a Kenyan court handed down tough sentences to three men convicted of participating in the 2015 Al-Shabaab attack on Garissa University that left 148 people dead.
One of the convicts, Rashid Charles Mberesero, a Tanzanian national, was sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to commit a terrorism act.
His co-accused, Mohammed Abikar and Hassan Edin Hassan, were each sentenced to 41 years in jail for their roles in the attack.
The sentences were handed down by Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, who took into account the time the men had already spent in custody.
The three men were convicted of conspiracy to commit a terrorism act, committing a terrorism act, and being a member of a terrorist group.
They will serve 15 years each for conspiracy to commit a terrorism act, 25 years for committing a terrorism act, and 20 years for being a member of a terrorist group. However, due to their time in custody, they will serve a total of 41 years in jail.
