On July 4, 2019, investigators began probing possible links between State House digital director Dennis Itumbi and a WhatsApp group called 'Tangatanga Movement'.

Itumbi was arraigned in court on Thursday to be charged over a fake letter that claimed there was a plot to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto.

According to an affidavit presented to court by investigator Yvonne Anyango, Itumbi is said to have first posted the fake letter in the WhatsApp group in order to be pushed to go viral on social media.

The WhatsApp group, created on July 8, 2018, had 256 members and was discovered on one of the phones recovered from a suspect arrested on Tuesday.

Ms Anyango urged the court to hold Itumbi into custody for another 14 days to allow police to summon members of the WhatsApp group to record statements.

She argued that the members of the group were close associates of Itumbi, increasing the chances of interference with the investigation.
