Published on July 3, 2019, Victor Wanyama, the captain of Harambee Stars, has spoken out about Kenya's exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a disappointing campaign.
Kenya's team collected a single victory in their three Group C fixtures, finishing third with three points. The team's performance was marked by a 2-0 loss to Algeria in their group opener, a dramatic 3-2 comeback against Tanzania, and a 3-0 loss to Senegal in their final group match.
Wanyama acknowledged that the team made some grave mistakes during the tournament but emphasized that everyone who represented the country gave their best. He also noted that the competition provided the team with valuable experience, promising that they will make a return to the next edition of the biennial showpiece.
"We have picked a lot of lessons as a team and it is difficult to exit now but we needed to learn first and we know in the future we can improve and make better steps," Wanyama said in an interview with Goal.
"To some in the squad, it was a learning experience, most of us it was our first time playing in the tournament and I think we gave our best. We can now dream of coming back again," he added.
Kenya will now focus on making amends in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for later in July. The team will take on Tanzania in a two-legged qualifier fixture.
