On 2 May, four gunmen kidnapped Musa Umar, a relative of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, in Daura, the president's hometown.

Two months later, on 3 July 2019, Kano police officers raided a hideout where Umar had been held, engaging in a gun battle with the kidnappers.

According to Kano police spokesman Haruna Abdullahi, Umar was rescued unhurt, and the police made arrests, seizing arms and ammunition.

A police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that 11 members of the kidnap gang were arrested and one was killed during the gunfight.

The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of $11m (£8.7m), but it is unclear if any payment was made.

Kidnapping for ransom has become a growing concern in Nigeria's north, with travellers in Zamfara, Kaduna, and Katsina states being targeted by gangs based in surrounding forests.
