U.S. Women's Soccer Team Reaches World Cup Final

On July 2, 2019, the United States women's soccer team secured a spot in the World Cup final for the fifth time, defeating England 2-1 in a match filled with VAR drama and a missed late penalty.

Christen Press opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a fine header, but England leveled nine minutes later with Ellen White's sixth goal of the tournament.

The U.S. restored their advantage in the 31st minute through Alex Morgan's header from Lindsey Horan's perfectly floated ball, which Morgan celebrated with a mocking 'sip of tea' gesture on her 30th birthday.

England thought they had leveled in the 69th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR video review.

VAR did provide England with a lifeline, awarding a penalty for a foul on White, but Houghton's soft spot kick was saved by Alyssa Naeher.

England's defender Millie Bright was sent off for a second booking three minutes from the end, sealing the U.S. victory.
