On July 3, 2019, a video emerged showing a convoy of cars believed to belong to the police, with Dennis Itumbi, secretary digital, innovations and diaspora communications at the Deputy President's office, being taken away in one of the vehicles.
Itumbi was arrested in Nairobi, specifically on Kenyatta Avenue, and the destination of the cars and where they were taking him was unknown, according to a source.
The arrest comes after Itumbi lashed out at the Daily Nation newspaper over an article he alleged indirectly and erroneously linked him to the 'assassination' letter against Deputy President William Ruto.
Itumbi claimed that the article was an example of 'copy and paste journalism' from unnamed sources who lie, and that the newspaper should not have published the story without verifying the facts.
He also criticized the newspaper for not bothering to call or text any of the communication officers in the Presidency, including himself, before publishing the article.
Itumbi's arrest is the latest development in a controversy that has been brewing over the 'assassination' letter, which allegedly threatened the life of Deputy President Ruto.
