On July 3, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as his Special Envoy to South Sudan, a move aimed at accelerating the implementation of the revitalized agreement on conflict resolution in the country.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the appointment is in line with Kenya's commitment towards shared prosperity in the region.

As Special Envoy, Kalonzo is expected to accelerate the implementation of the revitalized agreement on conflict resolution in South Sudan, a role that builds on his previous peace efforts in the country.

President Kenyatta had previously appealed to the leadership of South Sudan to consolidate the peace dividend to accelerate the country's social and economic growth, and this appointment is seen as a step in that direction.

With the 8th Anniversary of the independence of South Sudan just days away, President Kenyatta's move is aimed at securing South Sudan's place in the national, regional, continental, and global arena.
