On July 3, 2019, the African Union (AU) strongly condemned an air strike on a detention centre in Libya that resulted in the deaths of nearly 40 migrants.
The AU chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, called for an independent investigation to ensure that those responsible for the horrific crime are brought to account.
The international community was urged to redouble efforts to bring the warring parties to the negotiation table, with the AU chairperson reiterating his call for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of all civilians, especially migrants trapped in detention centres.
The air strike, which occurred in a Tripoli suburb, has been blamed on Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar, who has been trying to seize the Libyan capital for three months.
Pro-Haftar forces have been accused of carrying out a premeditated and precise attack on the migrant centre at Tajoura, with no one yet claiming responsibility for the attack.
