On August 24, 2021, the family of Benson Njiru and Emmanuel Mutura suffered another devastating blow with the death of their grandmother, Gladys Embu.

According to relatives, Gladys Embu, 94, succumbed to depression on Friday, just weeks after the brothers were killed by police.

The brothers, who were walking home from Mbui Njeru market after closing their pork butchery, were arrested by police and bundled into a police vehicle for allegedly violating curfew rules.

They were whisked off towards Manyatta police station but two days later, their bodies were found at Embu referral hospital mortuary.

A post-mortem revealed that the brothers succumbed to head and rib injuries inflicted with a blunt object.

Relatives say Gladys Embu stopped talking after the brothers were laid to rest and later started foaming at the mouth before being taken to hospital for a check-up.

“Sadly, she passed on as she underwent treatment,” said Felix Nthiga Njagi, the family spokesman, adding that doctors told them she was suffering from depression.
