Kenya's External Trade Surges to KSh1.4 Trillion in H1 2021

According to recent data, Kenya's external trade value rebounded strongly in the first half of 2021, reaching KSh1.4 trillion, a 24.3% increase from KSh1.094 trillion in the same period of 2020.

Published on August 24, 2021, this growth is attributed to the global economy's recovery from COVID-19-related disruptions.

During this period, imports into the country rose by 27.7% to KSh991.5 billion, while exports increased by 16.3% to KSh368.7 billion.

Kenya's exports were dominated by food and beverages, accounting for 42.3% of the total, followed by consumer goods at 27.9% and non-food industrial supplies at 25.8%.

Uganda emerged as Kenya's largest export destination, with goods worth KSh36.4 billion, followed by the Netherlands at KSh31.1 billion and the US at KSh26.6 billion.

On the other hand, China was the largest source of Kenyan imports, accounting for goods and services worth KSh208.9 billion, followed by India, the UAE, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the US, Netherlands, South Africa, Germany, the UK, and France.

Approximately 39% of the imports comprised industrial supplies, 16.1% were fuel and lubricants, 14.3% were machinery and capital equipment, and 10.4% were food and beverages.
