Located in Western Kenya, Webuye town was once a thriving economic hub, thanks to the presence of the Webuye Pan Paper Mills. However, the mill's collapse in 2009 marked the beginning of a downward spiral for the town's economy.
The mill's financial problems and inability to pay electricity bills worth Sh209 million led to its eventual winding up in 2009. This had a ripple effect on the local economy, causing businesses to shut down and leaving many residents without employment opportunities.
