Remembering Michael Kijana Wamalwa: A Selfless Leader and Visionary

August 23, 2003, marked the untimely death of Michael Kijana Wamalwa, a former Vice-President of Kenya, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness and unwavering commitment to the country's liberation.

Born in 1944, Wamalwa's early life was marked by academic excellence, earning him a scholarship to study abroad. He returned to Kenya with a law degree from Cambridge University and a degree from the London School of Economics.

Wamalwa's entry into politics was met with skepticism, with many terming him 'too young' to become an MP. However, he persevered, launching his political career and earning the nickname 'Kijana' after his attempt to vie for a parliamentary seat in 1974.

As a key figure in the 'Young Turks' movement, Wamalwa played a crucial role in the formation of the Forum For Democracy Restoration (FORD) and the push for constitutional reforms. His eloquence and wit made him a formidable leader, mobilizing opposition members to unite against the Moi government.

"The only way to free our country from tremendous poverty and total collapse of all institutions economic, civil, judicial and in every other way is for us to come together as wise people, work together, fight together to remove this government from power as soon as possible," Wamalwa once stated.

Despite his growing popularity, Wamalwa remained humble, stating that he would support the candidate fielded as the Narc flag bearer. His efforts were rewarded when he was appointed Vice-President in December 2002, a position he held until his untimely death six months later.

Wamalwa's legacy extends beyond his political career. He was a generous and charismatic individual who loved watching cartoons, particularly Tom and Jerry. His family's decision to 'retrieve his spirit' after his death is a testament to the deep respect and admiration they held for him.
