On August 23, 2021, a dramatic scene unfolded in Mombasa as two suspected terror suspects were arrested by Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) detectives.
The suspects were apprehended as they prepared to cross the Likoni ferry channel from the mainland to the island.
Video footage of the incident showed heavily armed police officers detaining the suspects after pulling them out of their vehicle, before handcuffing and bundling them into police cars.
According to a senior police officer, the suspects were under investigation for terrorism activities and were being held for further questioning.
Two AK47 rifles and some explosive-making materials were recovered from the suspects, but their identities were not immediately disclosed.
