On August 23, 2021, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru took a significant step towards empowering the county's youth by distributing assorted sports kits to 33 sports teams.

The kits, which included uniforms, footballs, boots, volleyballs, and nets, were given to selected football and volleyball teams from Njukiini and Gathigiriri wards.

According to Governor Waiguru, her administration is committed to empowering the county's youth through sports talent development and other empowerment programs.

Since taking office, over 300 clubs in the county have benefited from various sports equipment and uniforms, contributing to the success of many teams during various competitions.

Some clubs have produced players who have been selected to join the Kenya Super League and the Premier Leagues, while others have won scholarships to technical training institutes.

Waiguru emphasized the importance of sporting activities among young people, citing their health benefits and the need to prevent them from engaging in drug abuse and other criminal activities.
