As of August 23, 2021, Nairobi residents are subject to a new law aimed at keeping the city clean. The Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Bill, 2021, has been signed into law, introducing fines and penalties for various misdemeanors.
Urinating in undesignated places, spitting on the streets, and littering can cost you between Sh10,000 and Sh500,000. In addition, you risk imprisonment of between six to 12 months.
Acting Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu emphasized the importance of familiarizing oneself with the new law, stating, "Nairobi is the face of Kenya. We all need a clean and hygienic environment to live and work in."
The new law also prohibits the discharge of dirty water, sewer, or effluent into streets or water channels, as well as the obstruction of roads or streets. Residents are also prohibited from allowing trees and hedges in their homes or places of work to obstruct streets or footpaths.
Nairobi county attorney Lydia Kwamboka warned that the application of the law will be strict, urging residents to take more responsibility. "The Act empowers the county to take all lawful, necessary and reasonable practical measures for maintenance of the county at all times in a clean and sanitary condition, abatement and prevention of public nuisance and remedy any nuisance," she said.
