On a fateful Sunday night in 2021, a tragic incident unfolded in Njoro, leaving two lives lost. Constable Bernard Sivo, a 28-year-old police officer, walked into Njoro sub-county hospital, where his girlfriend, Mary Nyambura, 28, was being treated for a fractured leg.
According to Police Commander Jonathan Kisaka, Sivo was armed with an AK47 rifle loaded with 30 bullets and had just started his shift at the nearby Njoro Police Station. He shot Nyambura several times, killing her instantly, before returning to the station approximately 30 minutes later.
As his colleagues attempted to disarm him, Sivo turned the gun on himself, ending his life. The motive behind the killing and subsequent suicide remains unclear. The incident was reported to have occurred after midnight, with the hospital administrator informing the police that an armed officer had fatally shot a female patient, later identified as Nyambura.
The police recovered Sivo's rifle, which still had 11 bullets left, and the two bodies were moved to Egerton University mortuary for further investigation.
