On August 16th and 17th, 2021, the Mombasa Tea Auction offered 8.8 million kilograms of tea for sale, a decrease from 9 million kilograms offered during the same period last year and 11 million kilograms in the previous sale.

Of the tea offered, 6.5 million kilograms were sold, compared to 8 million kilograms sold during the same period last year and 6.8 million kilograms sold in the previous sale.

According to the auction records, the average price per kilogram increased to $1.96, up from $1.95 in the previous sale and $1.94 during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, multinational firms have announced plans to set a minimum price for their tea at the Mombasa Tea Auction in an effort to cut losses caused by the low cost of the commodity in the market.

The Kenya Tea Growers Association, an umbrella body for the multinational firms, has written to the East African Tea Traders Association, which manages the auction, informing it of the decision, just a month after the State introduced a reserve price for smallholder farmers.
