On August 23, 2021, Nairobi County Government signed into law the Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Bill, 2021, aimed at keeping the city clean and hygienic.

The new law imposes severe penalties for public nuisances, including urinating in undesignated spaces, spitting on the streets, sleeping in kitchens or food stores, and riding motorcycles or driving on footpaths.

Residents found guilty of these offenses will face fines ranging from Sh10,000 to Sh500,000 or imprisonment terms of six to 12 months.

Acting Governor Ann Kananu emphasized the importance of familiarizing oneself with the new law to avoid being caught offside.

County officials have vowed to apply the law strictly, with Nairobi county attorney Lydia Kwamboka stating that residents should take more responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.

County executive member for Environment, Energy, Water and Sanitation Larry Wambua thanked Riruta MCA Kariuki Kiriba for introducing the bill and ensuring its smooth passage.
