Published on August 23, 2021, Nairobi's Members of County Assembly (MCA) have decried the dilapidated state of Uhuru Park, a local and international tourist attraction site.
Uhuru Park, located in Nairobi, has been left in a state of disrepair, with the MCAs accusing the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and City Hall of neglecting the park's maintenance.
"We want the sectorial committee on Culture and Community services to inquire and report on the status and management of Uhuru Park as well as terms and conditions for the operations at the park," said Benson Mwangi, MCA for Mowlem.
The MCAs also pointed out that the park's management has been transferred to the governor's office and the NMS, citing the fourth schedule of the Constitution, which provides for the functions and powers of county government on public amenities.
Uhuru Park is not only a recreational facility but a national symbol of independence, and its dilapidated state is a cause for concern, according to Nominated MCA Kabiro Mbugua.
The MCAs have called on the NMS and City Hall to state measures they are taking to ensure that the park is rehabilitated to a modern state recreational facility.
