On August 22, 2021, a US military plane made an emergency landing at the Ramstein base in southwest Germany after an Afghan woman went into labor during an evacuation flight from a staging base in the Middle East.
According to the US Air Mobility Command, the aircraft commander descended the plane in altitude to increase air pressure, which helped stabilize and save the mother's life.
US military medics immediately helped the woman deliver her baby in the cargo hold of the plane after it landed at the Ramstein base.
Footage released by the US military showed the mother lying on a stretcher being carried off the plane by US soldiers.
The mother and child were then transferred to a nearby medical facility and are in good condition, the US Air Mobility Command said.
Evacuation operations from foreign countries continue under extreme conditions marked by scenes of panic and desperation at Kabul airport, a week after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan.
Since August 14, about 17,000 people have been evacuated by the US, including 2,500 Americans, the US government said earlier.
