On August 22, 2021, a group of Members of Parliament (MPs) allied to Deputy President William Ruto announced plans to sue President Uhuru Kenyatta for allegedly misusing Ksh13.5 billion in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Speaking at a fundraiser at St. Paul's Theological College in Kapsabet, Aldai MP Cornelly Serem called on President Uhuru to personally repay the money spent on BBI campaigns and popularization.
"Ksh13.5 billion can transform this country. We are actually going to put up a case against the president to make sure that he repays back the money," Serem said.
The Court of Appeal had on August 20, 2021, upheld the High Court ruling on the invalidity of BBI, declaring the document as unconstitutional.
MPs argued that the funds would have been better used to undertake several projects to the benefit of Kenyans.
"Our President never got authority from the parliament to spend the money and should therefore pay back our Ksh13.5 billion he spent," stated the lawmaker.
