On August 19, 2021, the Kenyatta University Coffee House was officially launched, marking the second coffee shop to be opened in a public university in Kenya.

According to Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, the Coffee Directorate plans to establish coffee shops in all universities in the country as part of a bid to increase coffee consumption among Kenyans.

Speaking during the launch, Munya stated, "Setting up coffee houses in public universities to promote domestic consumption of Kenyan coffee has been a dream for the ministry."

The move is part of the Ministry of Agriculture's plan to increase coffee consumption among Kenyans, with the goal of growing the consumption of coffee from the current 3 per cent to 7 per cent by 2025.

Currently, there are two other coffee houses opened in private universities, one at the United States International University- Africa (USIU) and the other at Strathmore University.

The ministry targets to open four more coffee houses in public universities within four years, with the aim of promoting value addition in coffee and consumption of Kenyan coffee in the country.

As part of the initiative, the ministry has witnessed a milestone in the development of the domestic market for Kenyan coffee, with the total volume of coffee improving from 509 metric tonnes in 2009/10 to 1,577 metric tonnes in the 2019/20 year.

The Cabinet Secretary also commended the Coffee Directorate for spearheading the promotion of value addition in coffee and consumption of Kenyan coffee in the country through aggressive promotional campaigns.

The consumption of coffee supports the Manufacturing and Food Security Pillars of the Big Four Agenda.
