On a remarkable day for Kenya at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, Emmanuel Wanyonyi made history by setting a new championship record in the men's 800m event, clocking an impressive 1:43.76 to claim the gold medal.

Wanyonyi's victory came after a thrilling finish, as he overtook Algeria's Mohamed Ali Gouaned to take the top spot on the podium. Compatriot Noah Kibet secured a bronze medal in the event.

Meanwhile, Purity Chepkirui added to Kenya's medal haul by winning the women's 1500m event, crossing the finish line in 2:50.71 to secure the gold medal. Ethiopian Diribe Welteji pushed her hard, but Chepkirui held on to take the top spot.

Kenya's medal count at the Championships now stands at 13, surpassing the 11 medals won at the last Championships in Finland three years ago.
