On August 21, 2021, Sheila Chelangat etched her name in history by securing Kenya's first-ever bronze medal in the women's 400m at the World Athletics Championships.
Chelangat's impressive performance saw her finish third in a personal best 52.23 seconds, narrowly missing out on a better medal due to her cautious approach to avoid lane infringement disqualification.
"I had to push harder to get a medal and for sure this bronze is just huge for me," Chelangat said, reflecting on her achievement.
Chelangat's achievement was all the more remarkable considering she was a Form Two student at Lelu Secondary School at the time.
Meanwhile, Nigerian Nse Uko took home the gold in a personal best 51.55 seconds, while Polish Kornelia Lesiewicz secured the silver in 51.97 seconds.
