Kenya's early response to the Covid-19 pandemic was a beacon of hope, with the government and citizens working together to contain the spread of the virus. However, as the pandemic has become endemic, recent events suggest that the nation is losing its collective resolve to fight the disease.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe's warning, 'If we continue to behave normally, this disease will treat us abnormally,' was heeded by Kenyans in the early days of the pandemic. Citizens adhered to the Ministry of Health guidelines and protocols, often at great personal and economic cost.
Furthermore, the government's decision to bring in vaccines for vulnerable groups was met with enthusiasm from the public. However, as the pandemic has dragged on, there has been a general laxity in observing safety protocols, with many citizens and leaders abandoning guidelines and protocols.
Political leaders have led by example, holding super spreader rallies and giving the impression that Corona is no longer a concern. This is not only irresponsible but also puts the lives of others at risk. Kenyans working in critical sectors, such as healthcare and education, who refuse to be vaccinated are also being selfish, as they put the lives of their patients and pupils at risk.
The government has recently announced drastic measures to keep unvaccinated individuals from being a public menace, including keeping medical workers, teachers, and civil servants from work. However, the transport sector has been freed to carry passengers at normal capacity, including in the rogue matatu sector.
As the pandemic continues to spread, it is clear that Kenya is losing its initial collective resolve to fight the disease. The consequences are dire, with infections and positivity rates on the rise, and several Kenyans losing their lives to the virus.
It is time for Kenyans to soberly review their actions and get back on track. As Apostle Paul would ask, 'O foolish Kenyans! Who has bewitched you? After beginning in the Spirit, are you now trying to succeed by human effort?'
