On August 21, 2021, a devastating accident occurred along the Eldoret-Malaba highway, claiming the lives of four people and leaving three others seriously injured.

A lorry transporting sand from Eldoret lost control, collided with a saloon car, and then crashed into a Probox, which burst into flames due to delayed fire extinguishing services.

The four occupants of the Probox were burnt beyond recognition, while the driver of the lorry sustained minor injuries and was rushed to Webuye County hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the lorry was speeding from the Chimoi direction when it lost control and hit the Probox, sparking a fire that engulfed the vehicle.

Western Corridors Traffic boss Joshua Nasimi confirmed the incident, advising motorists to exercise caution in the area.

"It is so unfortunate that we have lost four people whose bodies have been burnt beyond recognition in this accident. Three others were rushed to Webuye hospital with serious injuries," Nasimi said.

Residents are now calling on the government to add a new lane to the road, which has become a hotspot area, and to install fire extinguishing machines in Webuye town.
