On August 20, 2021, Venezuela's Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro resigned, citing non-payment of salary for over a year, just days before a triple-header of World Cup qualifiers.
According to Jorge Gimenez, president of the Venezuelan Football Federation, Peseiro's resignation letter was received on Thursday, August 19, 2021.
"Yesterday (Thursday) we received a letter from the technical director rescinding his contract," Gimenez said.
Despite efforts to persuade Peseiro to reconsider, he confirmed his resignation on Friday morning, August 20, 2021.
Venezuela is set to face Argentina, Peru, and Paraguay in World Cup qualifiers between September 2 and September 9, 2021.
The team currently sits second from bottom in the CONMEBOL qualifying group, with the top four teams securing spots in the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.
Peseiro was appointed in February 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, and was owed "no more and no less than one year" of salary, according to Gimenez.
During his tenure, Peseiro oversaw one win, three draws, and six defeats as the "Vinotinto" coach.
