On August 20, 2021, Kenya's KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards) issued a warning to Kenyans against consuming certain maize meal and composite flour brands due to potential toxicity.
According to KEBS, the flagged brands failed to meet the required standards, posing a risk to consumer safety. The authority emphasized its responsibility to inform the public about the compliance status of products, enabling consumers to make informed choices.
KEBS conducts regular factory inspections, product certifications, and market surveillance activities to ensure the quality of products sold to Kenyans. The authority issues standardization marks (S-Marks) to manufacturers whose products comply with the required standards.
As part of its efforts to ensure consumer safety, KEBS has instructed the manufacturers of the affected brands to cease production and recall all substandard products from the market. The authority has also urged the public to report any instances of substandard products through its toll-free number 1545.
