Amidst the backdrop of Coast politics, Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi's recent decision to ditch Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has sparked a new development in the region. The One Kenya Alliance (Oka) has begun talks with him to spearhead its campaign in the Coast.
According to sources, Governor Kingi met Oka principals at Tamarind Hotel in Mombasa, marking the initial talks as the alliance seeks to consolidate its support in the region ahead of next year's polls.
Leaders of the alliance, including Musalia Mudavadi of Amani National Congress (ANC), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), and Moses Wetang'ula of Ford-Kenya, met with Governor Kingi before addressing the media.
Though Musalia Mudavadi was tight-lipped about the talks, Kalonzo Musyoka stated that they welcome new members, saying, "Ukiona vyaelea, jua vyaundwa," which translates to Governor Kingi being there for a reason.
ANC deputy party leader Ayub Savula revealed that they had been looking for Governor Kingi to join their camp, stating, "Finally, our principals met him and he is welcomed. Once he has been welcomed by the principals, we give them backing to welcome more leaders into our camp."
It is worth noting that Governor Kingi's decision to join the One Kenya Alliance comes after he was ousted as Kilifi ODM chairperson and his position taken by Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire due to "poor leadership" and friction with Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho.
Immediately after the meeting, Governor Kingi confirmed on his Twitter page that he had met with the Oka principals and held talks with them, stating, "Bumped into some of the principals of the Oka team in Mombasa; had a brief, impromptu discussion and that there is a need for further and structured engagement."
