Uhuru Appoints Kalonzo Musyoka as Special Envoy to South Sudan ¶
President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Kalonzo Musyoka, the former Vice President, as his Special Envoy to the Republic of South Sudan.
The appointment, announced on July 2, 2019, is aimed at promoting peace and security in the region, and comes at a time when Uhuru is hosting South Sudan President Salva Kiir.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kalonzo's appointment is in furtherance of Kenya's commitment towards shared prosperity in the region, and to the pursuit of lasting peace and security in South Sudan.
During a state banquet on July 1, 2019, Uhuru appealed to the leadership of South Sudan to consolidate the peace dividend to accelerate the country's social and economic growth.
Kalonzo has in the past been involved in mediation efforts in South Sudan and Somalia, and has been successful in helping to midwife the separation of the East African nation from Sudan.
He becomes the second member of the opposition that Uhuru has secured for a job in the region, after Raila Odinga, who is African Union special envoy for infrastructure.
