On July 2, 2019, a devastating fuel truck fire in central Nigeria's Benue state claimed the lives of at least 50 people.

A spokesman for the governor reported that the tanker, loaded with fuel, had fallen on Monday and people were scooping its products when it caught fire, resulting in the tragic loss of life.

Those who were badly injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

Such incidents are relatively common in Nigeria, where fuel is cheap but many live in extreme poverty.

Just last October, 60 people were killed when a spill at an oil pipeline in the southeast caught fire.
