On July 2, 2019, the Africa Cup of Nations group stage concluded with Mali defeating Angola 1-0, securing their spot in the last-16 draw.

Tunisia, ranked second in Africa, drew 0-0 with debutants Mauritania, securing second place behind Mali in Group E.

With Mali winning the group with seven points, Tunisia secured three points, and Angola and Mauritania earned two points each.

Angola's loss meant South Africa sneaked in, joining Guinea, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Benin as the best four third-place teams.

The last-16 stage will feature Mali against the Ivory Coast and Tunisia facing Ghana, who are chasing a seventh consecutive top-four finish in the Cup of Nations.

The highlight of the eight second-round matches is the clash of defending champions Cameroon and Nigeria, who have won the competition eight times between them.
