On July 2, 2019, the United States women's soccer team secured a spot in the World Cup final with a thrilling 2-1 victory over England.
US captain Alex Morgan scored the winning goal on her 30th birthday, heading home just after the half-hour mark to put her team back in front after Ellen White had cancelled out Tobin Heath's early opener.
However, the match was marred by controversy, with England having two goals disallowed due to VAR decisions. The first was a White goal that was called offside, while the second was a penalty awarded to England that was saved by US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.
England finished the match with 10 players after Millie Bright was sent off for a second yellow card late in the game. The US team, meanwhile, played the entire match without star player Megan Rapinoe, who was reportedly out with a hamstring injury.
The US team will now face either Sweden or the Netherlands in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 7, 2019, as they aim to win the trophy for the fourth time in eight editions.
